Thanks to everyone who attended our Myagdi Ambulance Project Dinner and made the occasion such a splendid success.
I wish especially to thank our Chief Guest, His Excellency Dr Suresh Chandra Chalise, Nepal's Ambassador to the UK; His Worship the Mayor of Rushmoor, Cllr Alex Crawford; Cllr Glynn Davies-Dear of Eastleigh BC; Mr Kul Acharya, the President of NRN UK; Senior Community Development Officer for Hampshire CC, Amanda Lee; Miss Katherine Browden, Trustee of Maddhat Shamuha and Mrs Joan Pragnell, Trustee of EGNA.
I was so grateful for the attendance of the representatives of The 41 VDC, Myagdi. They gave a special meaning to our gathering, reminding us, if such was needed, of the reason for our efforts over the past months.
I must once more express my immense gratitude to those donors who gave, without counting the cost, so very generously to the Project. Without their astonishing generosity our dream of providing the life saving Ambulance Service to the Myagdi District would still only be that, a dream. But now, in just 3 more months, those ambulances will be making a wonderful difference to the lives of the people of Myagdi.
I was particularly glad that serving officers and men of the Brigade of Gurkhas were able and willing to give up their free time to attend the Dinner: I well know how busy is their life and I thank them.
The Charity Dinner was excellently organised by our co-ordinator, Mr Dut Pun, Adviser to Myagdi Overseas Nepalese Association (MONA). The occasion was graced by the presence of Mr Yog Kumar Phagami, President; Vice President Mr Dhurba KC; Mr Bhim Purja, Secretary and Mr Nil Purja, Assistant Secretary; Mr Prakash Paudel, Treasurer; Patrons: Mr Tej Prakash Pun Mr Lilaman Sherpunja, and Mr Yogendra Chettri, all of MONA UK and Mr Dolman Pun, Adviser to MONA and Treasurer to Myagdi Ambulance Project.
So many people contributed their efforts to make last night a success and I will always be grateful. It took hard work and the generosity of love both of those who attended and those who helped organise and prepare: who prepared the food, who served the tables and welcomed the guests. The evening would not have been a triumph without the wonderful performances on stage: the dancers, the singers and musicians: all were the very best I could have hoped for.
Thank you all, I hope you all enjoyed the event as much as I did. Thank you so very much.
Kind regard

Charity dinner benefits ambulance project for villages of Myagdi in Nepal
There was a tremendous, exuberant atmosphere at the Ambulance Project Charity Dinner organised by the Myagdi Overseas Nepalese Association UK (MONA UK), at which His Excellency The Ambassador of Nepal, Dr Sulesh Chandra Chalise, was Principal Guest. As Mayor of Rushmoor, I was a Special Guest.
Led by the Ambassador, Guests were piped into the hall at Samuel Cody Specialist Sports College, Farnborough, where we welcomed by MONA UK President Yog Kumar Phagami.
We learned about the plan to base two four-wheel drive ambulances in the remote district of Myagdi, home to some 60,ooo residents, north-west of Katmandu and Pokhara, from early next year. These ambulances will for the first time enable any residents of the 40 villages in the district to be brought down to the hospital quickly, if necessary, instead of facing long journeys on foot.
As part of these celebrations, attended by over 300 UK residents, originally from Myagdi District, I was invited onto the stage to join the Ambassador in presenting Certificates of Appreciation to donors to the Ambulance Project charity.
With the help of Maddhat Shamuha (Nepalese Help) Co-Founder Kamal Bahadur Purja, who translated, I made the following short speech:
Your Excellency, Mr President, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Namaste.
Thank you very much for inviting me here to join you this evening.
It is wonderful to see so many gathered here to celebrate the Ambulance Project. I am honoured to share this time with you.
For a number of years, I have been involved in assisting ex-Gurkhas and other Nepalese to settle in Aldershot and Farnborough.
So, when I was elected Mayor of Rushmoor in May, I chose Nepalese Help – Maddhat Shamuha – as one of my three charities for the year, as I wish to encourage the integration of Nepalese into our community.
Following representations from Rushmoor Borough Council, the British Government announced on 15th November that it would provide £1.5 million in funding over two years to help address the resource pressures now, and in the future, on Rushmoor Borough Council, and to support other councils with large numbers of retired Gurkhas to manage future integration of retired veterans and their families, who wish to take up their settlement rights.
For this evening, I am happy to be here in support of your Ambulance Project.
As a token of that support, I am this evening making a personal donation of £350 towards the Ambulance Project.
I wish you all a happy celebration, and good health, peace and happiness in the coming year.
And I hope that the Ambulance Project is set up and running successfully in the Myagdi District by next October or November, when the Mayoress and I plan to visit Nepal and perhaps see the ambulances there.
After that, there was dinner and entertainment, and the opportunity to meet the people from the villages, including many serving Gurkhas and former Gurkhas and their family members. It was a most delightful evening, and really inspiring to see how these donors were determined to improve the quality of life of those living in the villages where they have come from .

MONA-UK Helps Raise Vital Funds for Myagdi Ambulance Project
For any who might not know about the Project, I should briefly explain its' aim has been to provide two fully fitted and equipped rough terrain ambulances to the International Red Cross in Nepal to establish an Ambulance Service to the 41 Villages District, Myagdi, an area that has never enjoyed the benefits of such a facility. It goes without saying what a revolutionary enhancement to their lives this will bring to the people of the District. The fund realised not only purchases and equips the vehicles but provides for their future upkeep and maintenance, so necessary in terrain which makes great demands on any vehicle.
Saturday was the occasion for formerly recognising the astonishing and gratifying generosity of all who donated to this worthy cause and, as a guest whose contribution to the project has been but slight, I found it a humbling experience to witness the selflessness and commitment of the people who have given their time and their resources to reach this spectacular achievement .
There was a truly great response to the invitations to the Dinner, I do not think there was a place at table left unfilled, once again a testimony to the generosity of the Nepalese community here in the South of England. We were treated to a good meal and entertainment on stage which left nothing to be desired. The singing, the music and, perhaps most of all the delightful performance of the dancers so full of the sheer joy of their dance was reward enough for us.
Donors who gave 50,000 Rs and more ( many double that sum) were individually honoured and presented with certificates. We had speeches from the Chief Guest, His Excellency Dr. Suresh Chandra Chalise, Nepal's Ambassador to UK ; from Special Guest His Worship the Mayor of Rushmoor who told us he had taken the Ambulance Project as one of his Mayoral Charities for the year and then further announced he was making a personal donation of £350; and from Special Guest, Mr Kul Acharya, President of NRN UK; Ambulance Project Chief Co-ordinator, Mr Kamal Bahadur Purja; and Officers of the Project and from the Myagdi Overseas Nepalese Association (MONA).
The Charity Dinner was very well organised by Mr Dut Pun, Adviser to MONA and co-ordinator for the Project and was further graced by the presence of Mr Yog Kumar Phagami, President of MONA; its' Vice President, Mr Dhurba KC; Mr Bhim Purja, Secretary; Mr Nil Purja, Assistant Secretary; Mr Prakash Paudel, Treasurer; Mr Lilaman Sherpunja, Mr Yogendra Chettri, and Mr Tej Prakash Pun, Patrons of MONA UK and Mr Dolman Pun, Adviser to MONA and Treasurer to Myagdi Ambulance Project.
Other guests were Amanda Lee, Senior Community Development Officer for Hampshire CC and co-founder with Kamal Bahadur Purja of Maddhat Shamuha (Nepalese Help); miss Katherine Browden,Trustee of Maddhat Shamuha and Joan Pragnell and Cllr Glynn Davies-Dear, Trustees of Eastleigh Gurkha Nepalese Association.
All in all, a wonderful evening thanks to the efforts of all who helped in its' organisation and preparation.
Kind Regards
Cllr Glynn Davies-Dear
